Dakila: Cyber Marital Law

PRESS STATEMENT from Dakila Philippines
21 September 2012

(DISCLAIMER: Any opinions written in this post are Dakila Philippines' own and do not reflect the viewpoint of any other Naga City Deck and/or NCD Contributor)

CYBER MARTIAL LAW

Four decades has passed since then President Ferdinand Marcos declared the Philippines under Martial Law. Throughout the regime, many lost their lives fighting for freedom while others who survived underwent torture and immense human rights violations.

Now, 40 years after Martial Law was declared, in a time when we have yet to fully experience a fully-functioning democracy, another hurdle is thrown at us and our freedom of speech.

The Internet has become an important tool and a strong force in activism. Many campaigns have gained ground and strong support from the public through online presence. The Internet was a place where critical minds say what need to be said about the government and its officials without the fear of getting into prison. Was. It is now a thing of the past.

With the passage of the Cybercrime Law, allowing criminal penalties for online libel, freedom of expression is again curtailed. The medium that used to help the public become vigilant is now guarded by the government. Now, anyone who says anything that can offend someone can be thrown to jail.

From Martial Law we’ve learned the importance of freedom of expression. The price we had to pay to regain it were thousands of lives. Now, in what feels like a Cyber Martial Law do we need to be all the more vigilant, because we want real democracy, a fully-functioning democratic country and we say #NeverAgain to Martial Law, cyber or not.

Dakila: Anti-Epal Activists highlight problems beyond Epal

PRESS RELEASE from Dakila Philippines
01 October 2012

Contact:                Betty Romero (“No More Epal”): 0917 821 7227

Anti-Epal Activists highlight problems beyond Epal

Manila – Anti-Epal activists, led by Mae Paner dressed as the popular character Juana Change, trooped to the Comelec to join the thousands of political candidates to file their certificates of candidacy on the first day of filing for the May 2013 elections.  Candidates will have until the Friday, October 5 deadline to file their intention to run.

“I am here today to file my certificate of candidacy for the Epaliticians’ Party List, or EPaL, along with my family members who are also running for political office,” declared Paner as Juana Change.  “I have with me my Auntie Sen Change, husband Don Juan Change IV, my sister Yoko Change, my son Juan Change V, and my granddaughter Juanita ‘Luce’ Change. We call her ‘Bariya’. We are here to continue the legacy of Change that my late great grandfather started in 1898.  In Philippine politics, Change is inevitable. My father and mother are here to witness the continuation of the Change legacy. Even my great grandfather is here, but he’s in an urn,” added Paner wryly, tongue firmly in cheek.

Members of the No More Epal Movement joined the real filers today to highlight what it calls the “deeper problems of Philippine politics.”  In a press statement, the group said that the problem of “epal”, “the habit of politicians to claim personal credit for publicly funded projects and programs,” is only a symptom of the deeper problems of patronage politics, family dynasties, and campaign finance, among others.  “Many of our supporters have asked if we are only focused on the problem of ‘epal’.  Many have even suggested that we should go beyond epal,” said Vincent Lazatin, founder of the No More Epal Facebook page.  “We are here today to start a deepening of the discussion of our politics. Epal is merely a symptom of our rotten politics. We must direct our campaign to the real issues.”

Paner was accompanied by theater actors and members of Dakila, as the character Tita Sen Change, and other performance artists filling in the roles of Juana Change’s relatives.  “It may seem ridiculous to come here with members of the Change family all of whom intend to file their certificates of candidacy, but this is what our politics has become – a family business,” said Kate Lim from the artist group DAKILA.  “Look around and you will see mother, daughter, husband, son, brother, sister all running for various positions in politics.  It’s crazy.  We are here today to highlight just this one aspect of our politics, but there are so many other problems as well.  The No More Epal Campaign, which has been surprisingly popular, is really only an entry point to discuss the poor state of our politics and political institutions,” Lim added.

The anti-epal movement has gained a lot of popularity in recent months as an online campaign has caught the popular imagination.  Aside from online campaigns on the popular social networking site Facebook, there are websites and blogs that have taken up the anti-epal campaign.  Some public officials such as Mayors Alfredo Lim and Herbert Bautista of Manila and Quezon City, respectively, have ordered signs and billboards bearing their names and images taken down.  Both Mayors Lim and Bautista have separately said that the signs and billboards have been put up without their approval by their supporters.

40th Death Day of Sec. Jesse Robredo

Quarenta Dias kang kagadanan ni Sec. Jesse Robredo
September 27, 2012
Sequence of Activities

On this page you will see updates of the 40th Death Day of Sec. JMR

Every time I see images of Sec. Jesse around the city, there is still a tingling pain in my heart that I still cannot believe that he will not ever come back physically here in Naga. JMR is just but one man who changed a City (Naga) for the better, he is just but one man who tried to change the whole country when he was Secretary of DILG. This man's footsteps, JMR's "tsinelassteps", lead us to the path towards positive change in the government that it was not just a mere dream, but a spark of hope and reality.

Jesse M. Robredo lives in our hearts forever! Proud Akong Naguena! #SalamatJesse

Ang kanyang tsinelas
Ang saksi sana
Nang kanyang tinahak
Ang daang malubak
Sa rupok ng suelas
Siya'y nagpakatatag
At naging huwaran
Lingkod na matapat

Ang kanyang tsinelas
Kasamang sumukad
Sa taong mayaman
Maging sa mahirap
Sa mahabang lakad
Tinawalang nangarap
Na tayo'y kabayan
Sa buhay na payak

Dios Mabalos manoy maraming salamat
Pilit mong tinuwid liko naming landas
'Di kayang burahin ni alat ng dagat
Tsinelas mong babad sa mabuting palad

Ang di pa matuto
Sa aral mong lantad
Tsinelasin mo po konsensiyang matigas

Ang kanyang tsinelas
Naabot mo sa gasgas
Na walang sinayang
Sa patak ng oras
Hakbang na kaya
Sa mata ng bukas
Kinayang umakyat
At Dios ang may basbas

Ang kanyang tsinelas
Tuluyang nabutas
Tulad ng buhay niyang maagang nagwakas
Kapwa tao naway magising mamulat
Dakila niyang yapak
Sundan bawat apak

Dios mabalos manoy maraming salamat
Pilit mong tinuwid liko naming landas
Di kayang burahin ni alat ng dagat
Tsinelas mong babad sa mabuting palad

Ang di pa matuto
Sa aral mong lantad
Tsinelasin mo po
Konsensiyang matigas

Dios Mabalos manoy maraming salamat
Dios Mabalos manoy saimong maorag
Dios Mabalos manoy maraming salamat
Dios Mabalos manoy sa dalan mong maorag

Investigating the Link

The world we now live in revolves around a massive system of information known as the World Wide Web. Its infinite hands reach out and get entangled so much in the daily weavings of human life that now, everybody, or at least almost everybody, is online. Everybody has a Facebook account. Everybody gets entertainment from Youtube. Everybody is but a page away from everything he has to and wants to know. In fact, everybody is just a click away.

And yet, in a world of so much connectivity, somehow, we have never been so apart.

Because online, people fight wars. People create discord. People step on each other's rights. People spread advocacies that undermine other people. People copy and steal from other people's minds. Things we would not do to our neighbors are being done to people from across continents. And with a cloak of anonymity to protect us, we have no consequences to be afraid of.

We have to realize that the World Wide Web is not simply a tool of our pleasure and convenience, but an extension of human life. That, as we create online versions of ourselves, we must also endow them with the values that allow us to live peacefully offline. That even online, every right we enjoy has an equivalent responsibility. That, as the Web is as powerful a weapon as any war machine, we must take care in making sure we are not stepping beyond boundaries of respect and courtesy.

But where do we start?

Awareness is key. Knowing what is right and what is wrong is always the first step towards moral wisdom, even in a medium so advanced as the Internet. And as we, the youth, are the most involved in the dealings of the Web, the campaign towards responsible and informed use of social media must start with us.
