"Aletheia Concert", A World-Class Experience

Last January 9, the Tent of Avenue Plaza Hotel was filled with world-class performers that has wowed Naguenos and music lovers. The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers with their brilliant conductor Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang Jr. performed their way to the hearts of the audience using their strong vocal prowess and stage presence.

Giving back to the community. Bringing the UST Singers to Bicol was a dream now fulfilled by the Tomasinong Bicolano, CamSur chapter, an association of UST alumni based in Naga City and in the province. Tomasinong Bicolano was revived during the quadricentennial celebration of the University in 2011. With more or less a hundred registered members, Tomasinong Bicolano were able to accomplish projects such as: Outreach Program with the Gawad Kalinga in Balatas, Naga City; Training Catechists in the Archdiocese with resource speakers from UST; Training Day Care Workers in Pili, CamSur; A 3-month Bulilit Health Workers Training Program for selected top 20 pupils of Naga Central Schools and other activities which were all recognized by the mother UST Alumni Association. The concert basically brought greater awareness to fellow Bicolanos of the Tomasinong Bicolano's spirit of SIMBAHAYAN, that is, Tomasinos para sa Simbahan, Bahay at Bayan. To be honest, I was amazed that the association have done so much already for our fellow Bicolanos in such a short period of time after the group was revived. Kudos to these Tomasinos for giving back to the community.

"Aletheia Concert", a world-class experience. As part of the audience, watching the UST Singers who was awarded twice as the Best Choir of the World, made the night a world-class experience too. The UST Singers started with religious songs to international songs then to our own Filipino songs. It was a full-packaged line up of songs as they cover different aspects of choir singing. I am not a musician or a singer per se, but I really appreciate those who share their talents for the benefit of others. The organizers did so much to make this dream a reality in sharing the university's pride. I have seen many professors and students during the concert who I believe are music lovers too. It's absolutely possible that they  have been inspired more to do their own craft in music and to be able to perform worldwide.

Venue for musical events. It is my dream for Naga City to "cater" to musical events. Cater in a sense that while any venue may be able to accommodate such events, I believe that the Aletheia is a type of event that will be even more melodious in a huge auditorium, fit and well padded for us to hear every bit of music and tone the performers are producing. Don't get me wrong though, the Avenue Plaza Hotel has been always on top of the list when it comes to customer service. Generally speaking, the concert was another once in a lifetime event in Naga when a world-class choir performed on stage for us. It was a well-organized event and we need to see more events like this especially for the Bicolano youth.

Call for Tomasinos all over Bicol Region. Calling all Tomasinos! Your alma mater needs you to continue your journey in being a Tomasino and that is to give back to your community. For more details visit Tomasinong Bicolano's Facebook Page HERE

Congratulations to Tomasinong Bicolano headed by Dr. Marimil Bombase for a very successful event. May your group continue to be a blessing to our community.

Special thanks for Ms. Sheila Basbas and Sir Irvin of F12 Events, Creatives and Design for the opportunity to watch the event, from NcD, Nick and Ms. Ivy.

The organizers, Tomasinong Bicolano.

Go Local: Bignay Juice Concentrate

You know you're getting old when you appreciate healthy food. I'm quite a fan of healthy drinks and D.I.Y homemade fruit shakes whenever I have time to make one. Whenever we are at the grocery, international brands can really capture your attention when it comes to packaging and unique flavor since they are not locally produced. But how about getting to know local products that are equally healthy (but of different nutritional substance) with that of the international flavors but way more cheaper?

Take for example the Bignay Juice Concentrate which is locally produced here in Camarines Sur and the international Old Orchard Apple Cranberry. The color of the Bignay juice when mixed proportionally with water looks actually the same with that of the apple cranberry. If you like cranberry juice then I think you'll also like the Bignay Juice.

What are the health benefits of Bignay? "Bignay (Antidesma bunius), also know as “bugnay” or “burnay” has Vitamin B-complex content and resveratrol that acts as an antioxidant; may reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and bacterial diseases. It is also good for digestion."

19th AcadFest: “Withstanding the Wave: The Youth Response to Mitigating Calamity Risks and Optimizing Resources.”

19th UP Harong Academic Festival

Born after typhoon Rosing ravaged our beloved region in November 1995, the University of the Philippines Harong (UP Harong), for almost two decades now, has served as an avenue for Bikolano UP Diliman students coming from the province of Camarines Sur and the cities of Naga and Iriga to give back to their mother province, as well as maintaining organizational solidarity among Bikolano students in the University.

On the Activity: Instilling Disaster Preparedness in the Bikolano Youth

Primarily, our advocacy has taken the form of holding our annual flagship project, the Academic Festival(or AcadFest, as it is popularly known) which aims to contribute to social and academic development among the Bikolano youth. It is the single biggest educational endeavor ever created by any youth organization in Camarines Sur. For the past nineteen years, it has served as a training ground for the Bikolano youth where they are empowered to further mold their talents and potentials.

In the light of the recent calamities that befell our nation and our region, UP Harong’s 19thAcadFest seeks to instill in the Bikolano youth the value of giving back to the homeland that nursed our infancy and being prepared for the natural calamities that may happen—the very circumstances in which our Organization was born. Hence the theme: “Withstanding the Wave: The Youth Response to Mitigating Calamity Risks and Optimizing Resources.”

On the Theme: Withstanding the Wave

For us Bikolanos, natural calamities have mostly defined our history as a people, with the frequent typhoons and volcanic eruptions, making resilience a regional trait. The relative frequency of such disasters even led one commentator to exclaim that with Bikol, with its kind people and rich land, the Almighty had to invent these natural disasters “to even things up.” With the prospect of a looming ecological crisis and climate change affecting our planet, one can say that the advocacy for maintaining an active role in withstanding this wave would be of crucial importance.

This year’s AcadFest is precisely anchored on this remarkable sturdy character of the Bikolano, and the youth’s role in actively promoting the mitigation of risks and being prepared for these calamities in the future

On the Events: Adopting an Attitude of Awareness

UP Harong’s 19th Academic Festival will be held at the Camarines Sur Capitol Convention Center, Pili, Camarines Sur, from 7-10 January 2015.

The individual events comprising this year’s AcadFest include: the 19th Tingogninrason Debate Tournament;the 17th BoseskanJovenes Public Speaking Contest;the 13th HarongninDunong Quiz Bee;the 12th Sural Essay Writing Competition;the 11th GayonBikolnon Poster Making Contest;the 7th LadawanninKabikolan Photojournalism Contest;the 5th IstoryangSuanoyCompetition; Gala Night; and the 2nd HerassaBanwaan Radio Broadcasting Tournament -- by John Carlo M. 19th UP Harong Academic Festival

Naga City - On January 7 to10, 2015 at the Camarines Sur Capitol Convention Center, the University of the Philippines (UP) Harong, a duly recognized organization of UP Diliman students from the Province of Camarines Sur will be holding their annual Academic Festival (AcadFest) now on its 19th installment channels for enhancement of academic potentials, and to develop awareness of and commitment to the province. For many years, UP Harong had never stopped doing the best that it could to keep the Bicolano youth concerned with alarming social issues around them. This year, UP Harong aims to encourage the youth to partake in reducing disaster risks and promoting the common good through eliminating apathy.

The theme for this year's AcadFest is “WITHSTANDING THE WAVE: The Youth Response in Mitigating Calamity Risks and Optimizing Resources.” The AcadFest serves as a venue of intellectual discourse and meaningful exploits for more than 100 students coming from different schools in the Bicol Region. It is composed of various academic contests like debate, quiz bee, public speaking, essay writing, photojournalism, etc.

A culmination of academic prowess, skill and determination among the cream of the crop in high schools all about Camarines Sur and beyond through the Bicol Region Bolstering the ideals of fortitude and civic commitment, this year’s theme for the event reminds all people the plight brought about by the wrath of natural forces, as made evident by recent hardships experienced by our fellowmen, in the hope of increasing support and awareness for this matter.

This event is co-presented by: Provincial Government of Camarines Sur, City Government of Naga, Municipal Government of Pili,  Center for Youth Advocacy Network. In partnership with: Asiawise Study Center
