#NCDfoodTrip: Captain Shawarma

Naga City - It's been a while since I ate shawarma. How many shawarma places do we have in Naga by now? Remember the authentic Shawarma along Magsaysay Avenue called Haidnor located in front of WestPark? A bottle of beer was always fun served with Haidnor's Shawarma in pita or on a plate. After Haidnor, I was a fan of Spice Eleven Shawarma, owned by  friends who opened some time in 2010. For a few years they grew several branches around the city. There "to-go" place beside Saint Joseph School and their first store at the food court of Nagaland E-mall were the two sources of the hottest shawarma in town after Haidnor closed its doors. I can actually eat one pita shawarma and shawarma rice in a box in just one seating, that's how I loved Spice Eleven Shawarma before. When they closed down business around 2015 due to other  priorities, from that time on I never tried any other shawarma in Naga not until last Saturday, November 12. Let's just say Haidnor and Spice Eleven was able to meet my standards in shawarma from Baguio.

Here's a quick story how I learned to love shawarma. Being a kid before, I hated beef, basically because I hated the "off" smell which eventually leaves a strong aftertaste in your palate. As I age, I appreciated beef from time to time and hey, I eat burgers right? Since it's not tasting like it's beef I believe that fast foods' burger patties really has a lot of preservatives just to counteract the aroma of the meat. I learned how to eat Shawarma during my college  years in Baguio. When you want to eat shawarma all you got to do is go to Session Road. Shawarma stalls grow in number every Session Road in Bloom during the Panagbenga Festival. It's a comfort food in the cold weather of Baguio. From that time on I was able to outgrew my hate for beef up to the point of enjoying Bulalo. That was how I gained my-kind-of-shawarma.

I found this shawarma place in ALDP Plaza Mall food court at Roxas Avenue (Diversion Road). Surprisingly the food court in this mall has a good foot traffic. Captain Shawarma is the only shawarma place in this mall and the rest are various stalls offering meals you can choose from. Trying to regain my craving for shawarma, I was able to try the Pita version and took home the Rice Shawarma.

Serving Size is for the win! I must say, P50 for the Pita Shawarma with their kind serving is really something that I was not expecting. The main ingredients of the Captain Shawarma's Pita version are: tomato-cucumber relish, white onion, plus the white/garlic sauce. For other shawarma's being offered, cheese is an add on, sometimes they come in slices of the basic cheese, but for Captain Shawarma, it's a cheese sauce. The Rice Shawarma for only P60 also has a good serving size.

Pita Bread is Homemade. Unlike other shawarma places, Captain Shawarma's pita bread is homemade. Meaning, we are assured that it's fresh.

If you want your shawarma more "garlicky" just tell the server that you prefer more white/garlic sauce than the cheese sauce. Captain Shawarma's beef is tender and thinly sliced making sure there's enough for your pita bread. This on the go meal with veggies and sauce is perfect for our fast-paced world or just a snack for a slow afternoon for us to savor the spices of Captain Shawarma's offering.

Captain does not only serve shawarma in pita bread or in rice. They also Shawarma Fries, Nacho's, All Meat and Shawarma Platter at very affordable prices. For drinks they serve Magnolia's Healthtea because they want you to drink healthy. I know shawarma is so damn good with softdrinks, you can always purchase from the neighboring stalls. =P. I loved the pita version of Captain shawarma, after two years of not eating this delicious meal, now I can say I have regained my craving for shawarma.

Captain Shawarma has two other branches in Naga. One is located along Ateneo Avenue and one is right in front of the USI's HS gate. With their pricing, it's still affordable for students considering that the serving is that of a one full meal.

Thank you for having us Captain Shawarma! More power!

Happy Finds in Naga: Bamboombayan Diner

Students know how to find for cheap but satisfying food for snack or lunch. Decades ago and though still true these days, the following are very popular as Happy Finds of students: "Second gate kang UNC", another second gate kang Ateneo "sa Bayawas", sarong "pancitan" near the Metropolitan cathedral and a whole lot more. Probably if I did pursue my bachelor's degree here in Naga, chances are I would be able to enumerate more. Feel free to share your own happy finds dear students!

Our post for today is a Happy Find for the students of today's generation. Last Friday, I was able to finally visit Bamboombayan Diner near Ateneo de Naga University. It was high time to find out why BB is the talk of the class.

The name Bamboombayan or BB for short is from Bagumbayan, the barangay where it is located and technically speaking the place is made out of Bamboo. BB is young at heart and knows how to capture the heart of the youth. No wonder why they opened during heart's day during the year 2012.

Let met get ahead of you on what to expect from this little resto near the Ateneo.

1. The place is commonly dined by students not only from Ateneo but also from other schools and universities. Yuppies are also visible here.

2. BB is not your average carinderia because they have  a VERY unique specialty. One that you cannot actually see yet from other restaurants here in Naga. Emphasis on the SAUCES my dear friends.

3. The place is not a posh food place but just enough for students and those who are looking for a yard-like ambiance of a home.
4. Regardless of the physical store, you will be surprised with what they are using as kitchen wares. Ceramics, glass and stainless steel spoon and fork which is just right especially for the chicken. Forget about battling with the chicken using the plastic spoon and fork.
5. BB was born out of compassion for others and not entirely for profit. The Clubhouse of the Ateneo played a major role for the owners of BB. Read on towards the end to know why.

SECOND LEVEL. My favorite spot would be the second level of BB. We came at the perfect time last Friday to enjoy an amazing sunset which is just an add on during your stay at BB. Fixtures justifies the name of the place and makes you feel like having lunch in your own garden or yard. BB is located along Mother Francisca street at Bagumbayan. Since BB is not your ordinary carinderia, it is just a whole lot of different level in that spectrum.

"Home of Fried Chicken and Sauces". While chicken is the main product of BB, they offer a variety of sauces that can be used either as a topping or a dip for your fries. BB's chicken is one of a kind. What are the 6 spices then? Here's a tip, pepper is one the rest is for us to find out. According to the owners the spices are from Saudi. So that you can have an idea on how special BB's chickens are, let's just say it's head to head with the Cajun  Chicken of Bigg's Diner, NO KIDDING! Sauces are in Mushy Gravy, Creamy BB, Baked Garlic, and Arabian Curry. My personal favorite  sauce would be the Baked Garlic.

Don't forget to like Bamboombayan on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/Bamboombayan

BB is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm.

CLICK HERE to find BB on Google Maps

For the meantime, Bamboombayan delivers for bulk orders only. Minimum of 10 packs if a bit far from the central business district of Naga and a minimum of 4 packs if within centro.

Contact Number: 0933 365 5697
Bamboombayan's Menu
Apart from chicken, they also offer Pork Rice Meals which starts from P45.00 to P55.00. Among the choices are Crispy Sisig in classic, in mayo or in mayo + egg, Tenderloin Tips w/ Corn, and Bistek Bikol .

This tall Iced Cappuccino is only P32.00

BB Fried Chicken in a Basket will be available
starting August 26, 2014
This is something to look forward to. We'll keep you posted once price is available.
Also, on Tuesday, next week will be a new menu board with NO PRICE INCREASE
that will justify BB's claim to have the most affordable fried chicken in Naga City.

Chickens come in flock, este Deli or Plain. Deli is served with potatoes on the side. While the basic or plain is served with the chicken and rice only. The Crispy Classic is only P42.00. Not bad right?

Crocante Chicken
*Pardon the photos with low light. My takes did not give enough justice for the food.
Arabian Curry Deli

Mushy Gravy Deli, this is one of the best sellers of BB for only Php 73.00. Php 49.00 only for the Mushy Gravy (Chicken and rice).

Fresh Potatoes! Patata Fritos in Onions of BB

Creamy BB Fried Chicken for only P55.00

There's more to the bamboo than meets the eye. Behind Bamboombayan are two, young, business partners Marion and Kaye. Marion is the man behind the business concept and marketing strategies of BB and also a worthy to note football enthusiast not only in the Ateneo but also in Naga City. Out of passion for football, then came passion for food and service for others. He was connected with the Clubouse of the Ateneo wherein employees of the snack house were scholars / football players to be specific. Kaye on the other hand is head of the operations of BB. Clubhouse memories served as an inspiration for the owners. The tandem of these two yuppies create a friendly atmosphere in the store. Upon observation, customers feel comfortable here and there were even a group of students who were (I think) practicing a dance presentation just right outside BB. Seldom do cars pass by here unlike Ateneo Avenue. This is also a blessing in disguise because there's less pollution and noise for the customers. BB and the owners were able to surpass different challenges. These young entrepreneurs have the heart and right attitude on what it takes to work hard for something.

I know we all have different palates and preferences with it comes to chicken, but give it a try and be surprised.

Bagumbayan's little secret is indeed a happy find. "The most affordable chicken in Naga" is here! 'Till our next Happy Finds session in Naga!

Photos and images without ncd logo are from Bamboombayan Diner's FB Page. Rates and prices are subject to change without prior notice.

* Thank you very much Marion and Kaye for having us.It was a fun Friday dusk/night with you guys. It's a pleasure having you on board our Happy Finds in Naga section. More power to BB!

Naga City to Celebrate Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day

Naga City's history during the Spanish era is but a very significant part in Philippine history. Naga City was established in 1575 on order of Spanish Governor-General Francisco de Sande, the city, then named Ciudad de Nueva Caceres earned its status as the third Spanish royal city, after Cebu and Manila.

Last February 20 of this year, Genaro Carlo B. Buenaflor, a young Naga businessman and GM Bicol's largest food chain, was installed as Spain's first honorary consul in the Bicol region. A Spanish consulate office was also established in Legazpi City to respond to the needs of Spanish communities and tourists in the region. The said office is the fifth in the country after Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Zamboanga. Bicol and Spain's friendship will continue to flourish now that Bicol has it's very own honorary consul.

From June 30 to July 6, various activities are lined up to celebrate the 400 years of cultural diversity and exchange between Spain and the Philippines. The events are brought to us by the Honorary Consulate of Spain for Bicol, the City Government of Naga, the Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement, Inc., Universidad de Sta. Isabel, and Ateneo de Naga University.

Events are the following: Special free screenings of Spanish Films at Emily Theatre and Ateneo de Naga University, Spanish Food Fest at participating restaurants, Historical Lectures by Historian Danilo Gerona and Dr. Felipe de Leon Jr., Chariman of NCCA to be held at the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary (also houses the Museo del Seminario Conciliar de Nueva Caceres), and a Historical Exhibit at Universidad de Sta. Isabel Colonnade from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and  last the Recuerdas, a free cultural concert featuring BAYANIHAN, the National Folkdance Company of the Philippines at the USI Auditorium.

Drop by at the Emily Theatre from 1:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 28 for the free screening of the three Spanish movies. Complimentary tickets will be given before Saturday and at the theatre. Admission to the Recuerdas is also free. There will be 800 tickets that will be distributed to public and private schools, colleges and universities.

This is a special screening of films in the Spanish language. Lectures on cinema and culture will be delivered after each screening.

Faith, passion and superstition mixed together in this Costa Rican drama film adaptation of the novel by Gabriel García Márquez.

The genius of Luis Buñuel is in his ability to both offend and delight at the same time. That's according to Derek Malcolm, film critic of The Guardian.

Viridiana was made in Sapin in 1960 after the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco had told his minister of culture to invite the country's leading filmmaker back from exile in Mexico to make films. Buñuel did the film but as soon as he completed it; he left secretly, leaving some materials to be automatically burned by the authorities.

The film was automatically banned in Spain. But the good news was it won at the Palme D'Or at Cannes despite protests.

El Laberinto del Fauno is a Mexican-Spanish dark fantasy film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro in 2006. Set in Spain years after the Spanish Civil War, the film's narrative traverse both this real world and the mythical world of an overgrown labyrinth.
